If you are looking for the best steal of a deal on a record this year -- and this beats that $5.99 cheapness of the Mars Volta on record release week -- go to your local music shop and grab yourself a copy of Belle & Sebastian's Push Barman to Open Old Wounds. This fantastic double disc set is extremely inexpensive, and is packed with every non-LP track from their EPs spanning 1997 through 2001.
Barman showcases the wittier and more creative side of Stuart Murdoch and company starting with their first EP Dogs on Wheels, which came after their stunning If You're Feeling Sinister LP. It's a surprisingly very well flowing record despite just attaching EP after EP after EP. But that's much to say that Belle & Sebastian, despite crafting out creative efforts, still retained that Belle & Sebastian-like sound in every song. And while the EP compilation doesn't include their most experimental song to date, the epic "Your Cover's Blown" from the Books EP, there's plenty of music for anyone here that may not fit in with any of their proper full lengths, but is well beyond any filler material, most more full than the LP tracks.
If you're a Belle & Sebastian fan, this is an essential collection especially if you haven't listened to any of this material before. And if you're new or haven't heard of this band, this is more than a welcoming parade for one of the finest bands of the late 90's to present. And let me tell you, "this is just a modern rock song."
