Iron & Wine's slow-paced melodic indie rock just got a nice boost of life with the partnership with Calexico in this stunning EP, In the Reigns. Where both bands are solid in their own identities, the pairing works out so well its hard to believe that they would not work with each other again; Surely they will.
The opening track, "He Lays in the Reigns" shows the northwest light-sounding Sam Beam and the southwestern flavored Calexico duo in full force. The mariachi like indie rock sound just works wonders in this track, as does the rocking uplifter, "History of Lovers", a song an Iron & Wine fan would be shocked to hear. It's got a kickin' beat and a tempo much faster than anything that has ever come out of Sam Beam's work.
"16, Maybe Less" is a nice moody sunset feeling song that has all the qualities of the old country western tingle that Calexico brings and the soft spoken Beam vocals. And the jazzy romance driven "Burn that Broken Bed" sounds like it was taken directly out of a movie soundtrack.
Anything more to say? Just go get this EP. It's a bargain!
