Architecture in Helsinki
In Case We Die

Release Date: 04/12/05

Score:

9.1
out of 10.0

Talk about an imaginative pop album! Architecture in Helsinki is a eight member band from Melbourne and they know how to be inventive and sleek, while keeping an indie pop format that is attractive and catchy. Some parts Belle & Sebastian, some parts Broken Social Scene or Arcade Fire, this band is a jumbo bowl of music all wrapped up in one fine tube.

From the opening "Neverevereverdid", one can see the craziness yet blissful record ahead. The spooky, dark melodic intro sets way for a goofy bouncey tune with female vocals, which then paves into a fast-paced sing-along thats almost like something you'd hear from an Arcade Fire song.

"Maybe You Can Owe Me" is one of the better songs on the record. It's catchy as hell, and has a peaceful yet harmonizing melody. The next track, "Do the Whirlwind" is the crazy first single from the record. It's got all the bells and whistles, literally, and a whole slew of other instruments, and includes a vocal style that rivals those of dance-punk origin yet on a dream pop stage.

Saying that this band ties into any specific genre is really something that can't be done. They have reinvented pop music with this record and while it may seem sometimes like its all over the board, so was the instant classic "You Forgot it in People" by Broken Social Scene. This is this year's Arcade Fire. Watch out.
