Radiohead's quantum leap from Pablo Honey to 1995's stellar The Bends was signified by the amazing slow tempo "Fake Plastic Trees." While other songs on Bends were equally impressive such as "Just" or "Planet Telex", none showed the dramatic change as "Fake Plastic Trees."
With it's sweeping epic musical backdrop and the rising and falling falsetto Thom York carries, the song just simply tears apart anything Pablo Honey can throw at it, including the world renowned "Creep."
The song is flat out beautiful in every way, from the music, to the vocals, down to the lyrics and the song title. Everything about it is magnificient. While many of Radiohead's songs at this time were nearing the sad and bewildered state, they still showed much rocking power and spirited lift. "Fake Plastic Trees" however, changed that, and it's one of the songs that anyone can listen to and tell that it's a transition from "Bends" to "OK Computer" and the rest of the Radiohead catalog. "Fake Plastic Trees" is dark, it's mellowdramatic, and its undeniably depressing. Radiohead shows the world it's impression of life with its use of metaphors.
so get ready and sing, it wears her out...
